Hyper Ultra Astronautics is a game about calculated movements across a slippery battlefield.
A top-down 2D shooter, Hyper Ultra Astronautics allows you to control a starship zooming across an asteroid field. You’ll use your four directional to aim yourself, another button to shoot, and another to propel yourself forward. The biggest hurdle to that you’ll need to cope with is exactly how much gas you’ll need to use to move. Holding down the move button might send you flying into objects and obstacles that you don’t want to be flying into, yet other times it might be necessary in order to get a power-up. Skating across the battlefield, although fun, is generally ill-advised.
There are two modes in the game: competitive and survival. Within the former, you’ll be pitted against three other individuals and attempt to get the most kills. (Currently, you can play competitive mode with all four players playing on the same keyboard.) While all ships spawn with a standard weapon, there are various power-ups that will drop on the battlefield, like torpedos or a scattershot weapon. You’ll need to position yourself carefully in order to succeed.
Survival works under the same rules, but instead of fighting three other people, you’ll fight hordes of various enemies. Positioning is paramount in survival, a few wrong steps could mean death, and death means starting over.
Hyper Ultra Astronautics is a game that doesn’t feel natural to play, but that’s not a bad thing. Once you know how to maneuver your ship, you instantly have an advantage over everything else, friends and enemies alike. Try it out for free.
